How to use System Restore
There are times when using our computers that we may accidentally delete necessary files that are needed for proper function of our computer. Fortunately, when this happens we can choose to do a System Restore to help fix the problem.
System Restore is a process that returns your computer to a previous state when your computer was functioning properly. Periodically, our computer systems perform a back up. When this back-up happens, restore points are created. Many computer systems will run these back-ups daily and create daily restore points, however they also happen when major system events occur as well. You can also set up your computer to run this back up and create a restore point at a desired scheduled time. System restore points will only go back for a certain length of time, as the system restore function continually purges the oldest restore points from the program as new ones are added.
System restore will help for both minor and major computer issues. Even if you have had an event happen that caused complete system failure, you can still go back into the system restore program in Safe Mode and return to a previous restore point. If you have not experienced system failure, you can start you computer in normal mode, and activate the system restore procedure. System restore is your safety net for whatever problems you may be experiencing, with the exception of computer viruses that have done damage to your system and caused your system to crash.
System restore is a function included on every computer system. If you do not know how to use system restore, it is quite easy. Start by clicking on the “Start” button of your tool bar. You will then choose “All Programs,” “Accessories,” “System Tools,” and “System Restore” in that order. You will then be given the option to choose your restore point. Choose the date that you want to restore your computer to and click the “Next” button to begin the restore process. Your computer will perform the restore procedure and then restart itself. Hopefully, this will have fixed your problem.
If your system has failed and you need to start you computer in safe mode, you will need to hit the F8 key upon starting your computer. This will bring up a screen with different choices for how to start your computer. You will want to choose the option “Safe Mode with Command Prompt.” This will start your computer in safe mode. You would then follow the same instructions as above to perform your system restore.
System restore is a great way to help return your computer to its previous performance state if you are having issues. Keep in mind however, system restore can not always fix what is wrong with your computer, but it is a great place to start. If you are having technical issues with your computer, system restore is one of the first options you should choose to get things running smoothly again. To avoid this problem altogether invest in some good Antivirus software and a good Registry Cleaner program.
